Irazú Volcano is the highest volcano in Costa Rica and has played a significant role in the country’s geological and cultural history. Its name means 'Thunder and Point' in an Indigenous language, and it has recorded major eruptions that have shaped the landscape and the lives of Costa Ricans, the most famous being the 1963-1965 eruption. It is a symbol of the power of nature.
The best time to visit is during the dry season, from December to April, as the chances of having clear skies to see the crater are higher. As for the time of day, we recommend arriving early in the morning (before 10 a.m.) to avoid the fog that usually covers the summit after midday.
Irazú Volcano National Park has some facilities for people with reduced mobility, especially in the parking area and access to the main viewpoint, where the terrain is flatter. However, some trails may be steep or uneven. It is recommended to contact park staff for specific information: you can find their contact details on the official SINAC website or by phone at (506) 2200-5000.
Near Irazú Volcano, you can explore the historic city of Cartago, home to the majestic Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels, an important pilgrimage site. Absolutely! Dress in layers, as the temperature at the summit can be very low and the weather can change quickly. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat, since solar radiation is intense. Don’t forget good walking shoes, water, and a snack. And most importantly: a camera with plenty of battery to capture the stunning views!
