Imagina un palacio real donde rugían tigres en lugar de dragones: la historia loca de Seúl que nadie te cuenta.
The palace is open from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM from March to October, and from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM from November to February, closed on Tuesdays. You can get there easily by subway using Line 4 to Anguk Station or Line 3 to Anguk Station, exiting through Exit 3; for more details, see the official Visit Korea website.
Admission for adults costs KRW 3,000 (approximately USD 2–3), while children and teenagers pay KRW 1,500, and it is free for children under 7 and adults over 65. Tickets can be purchased at the ticket office or combined with a pass for the Five Grand Palaces for KRW 20,000; check updated prices on the Cultural Heritage Administration website.
It is recommended to spend at least 1 to 2 hours exploring the main pavilions, the botanical garden, and the ponds, although you could extend it to 3 hours if you are interested in detailed history. This gives you time to appreciate the site without rushing, while leaving time for photos and rest.
Built in 1418 during the Joseon dynasty as a palace for queen dowagers, it was destroyed during the Japanese invasion in 1592 and rebuilt in the 19th century, becoming a symbol of Korean royal resilience. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its traditional architecture and gardens that represent harmony with nature.
Spring (April–May) is ideal for the cherry blossoms in the secret garden, and autumn (October–November) for the colorful foliage; avoid summer because of the heat. Visit early in the morning for fewer crowds and better light for photos, ideally between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM.
The palace has ramps at the main entrances and elevators in some buildings, but some areas such as the traditional gardens have stone steps that may be challenging. It is recommended to rent wheelchairs at the entrance (available free of charge, subject to availability); contact +82-2-762-4862 for advance assistance.
Just a 10-minute walk away is Changdeokgung Palace, another royal palace with secret gardens. You can also explore the Insadong neighborhood, famous for its craft shops and tea houses, or the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, about 20 minutes away by subway; combine visits for a full day in Seoul.
Wear comfortable shoes for walking on the stone paths and download the official app for audio guides in English or Spanish. Use a T-money card for public transportation and book tickets online if you are visiting during peak season; do not forget to stay hydrated and respect the rules about not touching artifacts to help preserve the site.
