Discover Uramba Bahía Málaga National Natural Park in Buenaventura. A unique experience to learn about its history and significance.
Access depends on the tides and sea transport, with boats operating from the tourist pier in Buenaventura generally between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. To get there, you must take a speedboat to Juanchaco, Ladrilleros, or La Barra, a journey of approximately one hour across the beautiful bay.
Prices vary; round-trip sea transport ranges between 80,000 and 100,000 COP, and although entry to the protected area may not have a fixed ticket office at every access point, activities such as whale watching have prices regulated by community councils. We suggest checking updated rates on the National Natural Parks website.
To fully enjoy the experience, especially if you want whale watching and to visit the waterfalls, we recommend staying 2 to 3 days. However, it is possible to do intensive day trips from Buenaventura if your time is limited.
Uramba Bahía Málaga is globally recognized as the 'nursery' of humpback whales that come to give birth in its warm waters. In addition, it is a unique example of cooperation between environmental conservation and Afro-descendant community councils that protect its immense biodiversity.
Without a doubt, the peak season is between July and October, when the humpback whale migration takes place, offering an unmatched natural spectacle. If you are looking for tranquility and want to enjoy the estuaries and mangroves without crowds, the early months of the year (dry season) are ideal.
Due to the geography of the area, which involves landings on rustic piers or beaches and trails through humid rainforest, access is quite difficult for wheelchairs. It is recommended to contact local operators in advance to assess whether they can provide personalized and safe assistance.
You are very close to Juanchaco and Ladrilleros, famous for their beaches and cliffs, as well as the peaceful beach of La Barra. A visit to the La Sierpe and Ostional waterfalls is also unmissable, with freshwater pools in the middle of the jungle.
Bring cash (ATMs are scarce or nonexistent), comfortable quick-drying clothes, a rain jacket, and biodegradable insect repellent. Do not forget to download our audio guide before leaving so you can enrich your experience without depending on an internet signal.
