¿Sabías que esta cascada oculta petroglifos de chamanes que invocaban espíritus hace 2000 años? Escucha los secretos que el agua no cuenta.
Mortiño Waterfall is open to visitors during the day, although it does not have a fixed closing time like a theme park. It is generally visited from early morning until sunset. It is about a 20-30 minute drive from the town center of San Agustín, and the best way to get there is by taxi, motorcycle taxi, or, for the more adventurous, by bicycle. There is no regular direct public transportation, so it is recommended to arrange with a local driver.
Good news! Entrance to Mortiño Waterfall is completely free. There are no ticket booths or fees to enjoy this impressive natural landscape. However, if you hire transportation or a guide, those services will have a cost.
A visit to Mortiño Waterfall is relatively short. Once you arrive at the main viewpoint, 30 to 60 minutes is enough to admire the falls, take photos, and enjoy the surroundings. If you venture onto any of the nearby small trails, with caution, you could extend your visit a little longer, but it is not a half-day excursion.
Although there are no ancestral legends of the ancient San Agustín people directly linked to Mortiño Waterfall like those associated with the Archaeological Park, its name 'Mortiño' (also the name of a local shrub with dark berries) is associated with the dark color of some of its rocks or the depth of the ravine. It is a place that inspires respect for the force of nature. Its main attraction is purely scenic, showcasing the geological beauty of the region.
The best time to visit is during San Agustín's dry season, from June to September and from December to February, when the weather is more stable and the trails are less slippery. As for the time of day, early mornings or the last hours of the afternoon usually offer the best light for photography and fewer people, although it is not usually extremely crowded.
Unfortunately, access to the main viewpoint at Mortiño Waterfall is not adapted for people with reduced mobility or wheelchairs. The observation area involves uneven paths and some incline. Caution is recommended for all visitors, and if you have any mobility limitations, assess the conditions on site or consult local guides for options.
San Agustín is full of wonders! Very close to Mortiño Waterfall you will find Mesita C (Archaeological Park), one of the most important sites. You can also visit the Magdalena Strait, where Colombia's most important river narrows to just a few meters wide. Other places of interest include La Chaquira and the various coffee farms that offer tours.
Of course, here are some key tips: First, wear comfortable, non-slip footwear, as the terrain can be uneven. Second, bring insect repellent and sunscreen. Third, do not forget your camera to capture the beauty of the place. Fourth, although it is safe, always stay on marked paths and do not get too close to the edges of the ravines. And above all, respect nature and do not leave trash behind!
