La Capilla de Belén es una joya colonial del siglo XVIII en Popayán, Colombia, famosa por su arquitectura barroca y su rol en la devoción popular durante siglos.
Bethlehem Chapel is generally open Monday to Saturday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, but we recommend confirming before your visit as opening hours may vary. You can check updated information on the official Popayán tourism website.
Admission to Bethlehem Chapel is completely free. However, if you would like to make a voluntary donation for its maintenance, you may do so at the reception area.
We recommend allowing 30 to 45 minutes to fully enjoy the chapel, its architecture, and the panoramic views of Popayán from Bethlehem Hill, where it is located.
Built in the 17th century as part of the Franciscan convent, it is one of Popayán's most emblematic religious symbols and an excellent example of colonial architecture. Several Baroque altarpieces stand out inside.
The early morning hours (9:00 am - 11:00 am) are ideal for avoiding crowds and enjoying better light for photos. During Holy Week, Popayán becomes an especially iconic destination for visiting it.
The climb up Bethlehem Hill includes steps and uneven ground, making access difficult for wheelchairs. The chapel itself also does not have adapted ramps, as it is a historic site with accessibility limitations.
A few minutes away you will find Humilladero Bridge (300 m), Caldas Park (15 minutes on foot), and the Negret Museum (10 minutes on foot). You can see more places on the official Colombia tourism website.
Wear comfortable shoes for the climb up the hill, use sun protection, and bring a camera because the views are spectacular. We recommend combining your visit with the nearby lookout at sunset.
