The park is open daily from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., but it is recommended to arrive early to avoid crowds. You can access it from Santa Marta by road (approx. 1 hour by bus or taxi to the main entrance at El Calabazo), and from there you walk or take mules; check the official website for updates: National Parks.
The entrance fee is 25,500 COP for Colombians and 77,000 COP for foreigners (children and students get discounts); it is not free, but it includes access to beaches and trails. You can buy tickets online or at ticket booths; more details at National Parks Fees.
At least one full day is recommended to explore the main beaches and trails, but ideally 2 days if you plan to camp or do longer hikes such as the one to Pueblito. Depending on your pace, you can cover the essentials in 6-8 hours, but allow time for breaks in nature.
The park protects the heritage of the Tayrona culture, a pre-Columbian indigenous civilization that inhabited the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta from the 1st century, with ruins such as Pueblito that showcase their architecture and traditions. It is a site of immeasurable value for understanding Colombian indigenous history and its connection with biodiversity; explore more in the park's official guides.
The dry season from December to April offers the best weather with less rain and ideal sun for beaches and hiking. Avoid the rainy season (May-November) to avoid flooding; go early in the morning to enjoy the tranquility and the best light for photos.
Access is limited due to uneven trails, stairs and sandy beaches; there are no fully paved routes for wheelchairs, but the main entrance and some initial areas are manageable. It is suggested to contact the park for adapted options: phone +57 5 421 0666 or at official website.
Nearby, visit the city of Santa Marta (1 hour away) with its historic colonial center and the Tayrona Gold Museum, or Minca for birdwatching in the sierra. Also, Palomino beach (30 minutes east) offers similar relaxation; combine your trip for a complete experience on the Caribbean coast.
Bring insect repellent, sunscreen, water and comfortable shoes for hiking; book accommodation or cabins in advance as single-use plastics are not allowed. Respect environmental rules, such as not feeding animals, and check weather forecasts; for enriching audio guides, consider resources such as IAudioguia.
