Impresionante basílica neogótica construida sobre un profundo cañón en Ipiales, Colombia, famosa por su imagen milagrosa de la Virgen tallada en piedra.
The sanctuary is open every day from 6:00 am to 7:00 pm. It can be reached from Ipiales (7 km) by taxi (15 min) or local bus. From Pasto it is 80 km away (2 hours by bus). More info: Ipiales Tourism.
Admission is free for everyone. If you want to visit the museum or bell tower, the cost is about COP 5,000 (approx. USD 1.3). Religious services are open to the public.
It is recommended to allow 2 to 3 hours to walk across the bridge, visit the main chapel, see the Guáitara River canyon, and explore the museum. If you include Mass or hiking on nearby paths, plan for half a day.
It is one of Colombia’s most important sanctuaries because of: 1) its stunning neo-Gothic architecture (1916-1949) built into the canyon, 2) the Marian apparition according to local legend, and 3) its designation as a Minor Basilica in 1954.
From June to September (dry season) to avoid rain. In December (the Virgin’s feast on the 7th-8th) there are massive pilgrimages. Best time of day: arrive before 10 am or after 3 pm to avoid crowds.
There is nearby parking and ramps in part of the complex, but the main access to the sanctuary involves steep stairs. Alternative viewpoints such as Rumichaca Bridge are accessible. We recommend visiting with a companion.
In Ipiales: Sanctuary of the Grotto (15 min) and Potrerillo Indigenous Market (Saturdays). 45 minutes away: Green Lagoon of Azufral Volcano. In Pasto: Lake La Cocha and the Blacks and Whites Carnival (January). More info: Nariño Tourism.
1) Bring a waterproof jacket (changeable weather), 2) Wear non-slip footwear for wet stairs, 3) Carry cash (there are no ATMs nearby), 4) Be respectful during religious ceremonies. Emergency phone: +57 (602) 773 0969.
