Discover the House of Founder Gonzalo Suárez Rendón in Tunja. A unique experience to learn about its history and significance.
The House of Founder Gonzalo Suárez Rendón is usually open from Tuesday to Saturday, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and on Sundays and public holidays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. It is a National Museum, so admission is often free or subject to a symbolic fee managed by the Ministry of Culture. I recommend checking the specific hours on the official website of the National Museum of Colombia or calling the museum. Although I do not have a direct link to the house museum at this time, you can find information on the website of the National Museum of Colombia.
Admission to the House of Founder Gonzalo Suárez Rendón is usually free for all visitors, as it is a national heritage property administered by the Ministry of Culture. However, on special occasions or for temporary events, there may be a symbolic fee. It is always a good idea to confirm by calling the museum before your visit.
To fully enjoy the Founder’s House and appreciate its architectural details and exhibitions, I suggest setting aside between 1 and 1.5 hours. This will allow you to explore the different rooms and immerse yourself in the building’s history without rushing.
This house is a historical treasure, as it was the residence of Tunja’s founder, Gonzalo Suárez Rendón, in the 16th century. It is one of the oldest and best-preserved colonial buildings in Colombia, representing a living testimony to the architecture and life of the Conquest and Colonial periods in the region.
Any time of year is good for visiting Tunja because of its cool climate, but to avoid crowds, I recommend going on weekday mornings. This will allow you to enjoy a quieter visit with fewer people, ideal for photography and historical reflection.
As it is an old colonial building, accessibility for people with reduced mobility may be limited in certain areas, especially on the upper floors or when crossing thresholds. I advise contacting the museum directly by phone or checking its official website for detailed information about ramps, available elevators, or special assistance. You can find its phone number in the directory of the Ministry of Culture of Colombia.
Tunja is full of history! Very close to the Founder’s House, you can visit Bolívar Square with the Tunja Basilica Cathedral, the Convent of Saint Augustine (Temple and Convent of Saint Augustine), the House of Scribe Juan de Vargas, and Saint Dominic Church, all within easy walking distance. The city offers an incredible historic center to explore.
I suggest wearing comfortable walking shoes, as the house has several levels and spaces to explore. If you are interested in history, consider reading a little about Gonzalo Suárez Rendón and the founding of Tunja before your visit. And do not forget your camera—there are beautiful corners to photograph!
