La Capilla Santa Bárbara es una joya colonial enclavada en el pintoresco pueblo de Barichara, Santander, Colombia. Construida en piedra caliza local, rinde homenaje a la patrona de los constructores y mineros.
The chapel is generally open daily from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. It is located on a hill opposite the Municipal Cemetery of Barichara. You can walk there from the main square in less than 10 minutes along Carrera 5. It is advisable to check updated hours on the official municipal website before visiting.
Access to the chapel is completely free. Although there is no admission fee, some visitors leave donations for its upkeep in the donation box inside the church.
A visit inside takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes. If you include the walk from town and time to enjoy the panoramic views from the lookout, we recommend allowing about 1 hour in total.
Built in the mid-18th century, it is a jewel of colonial religious architecture. It is dedicated to Saint Barbara, patron saint against storms, and served as a place of prayer for travelers before crossing the Chicamocha Canyon. Its walls preserve original rammed-earth details.
From December to March (dry season) for clear skies. We recommend visiting on weekdays between 9 and 11 am or 4 and 5 pm to avoid large groups. Sunsets from here are especially photogenic.
Access has limitations: there is a cobbled stretch with a slight slope leading to the atrium and steps at the entrance. The interior is small but level. For specific details, contact the Town Hall: +57 (7) 726 7603.
Less than 5 minutes away on foot, you can visit the Heritage Cemetery, the fascinating Stone Paper workshop, and the natural viewpoint on the Royal Road. The entire historic center is a 10-minute walk away.
• Wear comfortable shoes for the cobblestones • Bring water, a hat, and sunscreen • Respect the silence inside • Do not touch the historic altars • For more information: Official tourism guide
