A stunning complex of Buddhist caves and stone carvings set within a landscape of remarkable natural beauty.
The Feilai Feng Grottoes usually open from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (though hours may vary by season). They are located within the scenic area of Lingyin Temple, so entry is through that area. You can get there by taxi, tourist bus, or public transport (See more about Lingyin Temple here).
To visit Feilai Feng, you must first buy a ticket to the Lingyin Temple Scenic Area (approximately CNY 45). After that, entry to the grottoes themselves has no additional cost, as it is already included in the scenic area ticket. A great deal for so much historic beauty!
We recommend allowing at least 1.5 to 2 hours to explore the grottoes at a relaxed pace, admire the Buddhist carvings, and enjoy the natural surroundings. If you also plan to visit Lingyin Temple, you will need at least 3 to 4 hours in total.
Feilai Feng is a place of immense Buddhist significance, home to hundreds of Buddhist sculptures carved into the rock since the 10th century. Its name, 'Flying Peak,' comes from the legend of an Indian monk who believed the mountain had flown from India, making it a site of deep spirituality and artistic importance.
The best time to visit is during spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November) to enjoy pleasant weather. To avoid the biggest crowds, try to go early in the morning (right when it opens) or later in the afternoon, before closing time.
Because of the rocky terrain and the presence of steps and uneven paths, wheelchair accessibility is limited in some parts of the grottoes. However, some outdoor areas and main paths may be more accessible. It is recommended to contact the site directly (+86-571-87974366) if you have specific needs.
The grottoes are right next to the famous Lingyin Temple, one of the most important Buddhist temples in China and a must-see stop. In addition, Hangzhou's scenic West Lake is nearby, perfect for a boat ride or a cycling trip. (Discover more about West Lake).
Definitely. Wear comfortable walking shoes, pay attention to the details of the rock carvings, and consider hiring a guide or using an audio guide to understand the site's rich history. And don't forget your camera to capture the natural and artistic beauty!
