The Flaming Mountains, known scientifically as the Gaochang mountain range, owe their name and fame to intense erosion that has exposed layers of red sandstone, creating the illusion of flames under the sun. They are especially famous for their connection to the classic Chinese novel 'Journey to the West,' in which Sun Wukong, the Monkey King, extinguishes their 'flames' with a magical fan. This folklore has secured their place in Chinese culture.

Turpan is known for its extreme temperatures. The best time to visit the Flaming Mountains is during spring (April-May) or autumn (September-October), when temperatures are milder. If you visit in summer, it is absolutely essential to go early in the morning, shortly after opening, or late in the afternoon just before sunset, to avoid the most intense midday heat.

Within the developed tourist areas, some facilities have been put in place, such as paved paths and ramps at the main viewpoints. There is also a tourist train that runs through some areas, which may make getting around easier.

Turpan is a city rich in history and culture. Near the Flaming Mountains, you should not miss the fascinating Jiaohe Ruins (an ancient fortified earthen city), the Karez System (an ingenious underground irrigation system), and the Emin Minaret. All of them offer deep insight into the region's history and ingenuity.

First and most importantly, bring plenty of water, sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses, as the sun can be relentless. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Consider bringing a portable phone charger.
