Ngong Ping Village is generally open daily from 10:00 to 18:00. The most popular and spectacular way to get there is via the Ngong Ping 360 cable car, which offers stunning views. You can also take a bus from Tung Chung or Mui Wo. Check details on the official website: Ngong Ping 360.
Entry to Ngong Ping Village is free. Access to the Tian Tan Buddha itself is also free, but if you want to visit the relic exhibition inside, there is a small fee. Ngong Ping 360 cable car tickets are paid, and it is recommended to buy them online in advance to avoid queues. You can purchase them here: Ngong Ping 360 Tickets.
We recommend allowing 3 to 4 hours to fully enjoy Ngong Ping Village, Po Lin Monastery, and the Tian Tan Buddha. This includes time for the cable car ride, exploring the village, climbing up to the Buddha, and visiting the monastery. If you plan to eat there or visit the Tiantan World of Buddhas, you may need more time.
The Tian Tan Buddha is the world’s largest outdoor seated bronze Buddha statue and symbolizes harmony between people and nature, humanity and faith. It was completed in 1993. Po Lin Monastery, founded in 1906, is an important Buddhist center in Hong Kong and a pilgrimage site. Both are major spiritual icons of the region.
To avoid the biggest crowds, it is best to visit Ngong Ping Village early in the morning when it opens or later in the afternoon, especially on weekdays. Winter (October to February) usually offers cooler, clearer weather, ideal for the views. Avoid Hong Kong public holidays and weekends if possible.
Ngong Ping Village is largely accessible, with ramps and paved pathways. The Ngong Ping 360 cable car is also wheelchair accessible. However, reaching the Tian Tan Buddha requires climbing a long flight of 268 steps, which can be challenging. There are paths and lifts at Po Lin Monastery that provide some accessibility, but they do not reach the base of the Buddha. If you have questions, you can call Ngong Ping 360 at +852 3666 0666.
While visiting Lantau Island, you can explore the village of Tai O, known as the 'Venice of Hong Kong,' with its stilt houses and fishing village culture. You can also enjoy beaches such as Cheung Sha Beach, or go hiking on the island’s many trails. See more options here: Discover Hong Kong - Lantau Island.
Of course! I recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, and bringing a bottle of water, especially on hot days. Buy your cable car tickets online in advance to save time. Arrive early to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere before the crowds arrive, and consider riding in the glass-bottom cabin for an unforgettable experience. And don’t forget to try the tea and vegetarian food at Po Lin Monastery.
