Two millennia-old villages in the Huangshan Mountains, the cradle of Huizhou architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where time seems to have stood still among white houses and serene canals.
The villages of Xidi and Hongcun are usually open to visitors from 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM. To get there, the most common option is to take a bus from Huangshan Bus Station (also known as Tunxi). There is a regular bus service connecting Huangshan City with both villages. We recommend checking the latest schedules on the official Huangshan tourism website.
Admission to each village is charged separately. Generally, the price is about 104 CNY for Xidi and 104 CNY for Hongcun. Discounts are often available for students (with an international student card) and seniors. There may also be combined tickets if you plan to visit both. Check the latest prices at the ticket office or on the TravelChinaGuide website.
To fully enjoy the atmosphere and explore the most interesting corners, we recommend spending at least half a day in each village. If you are short on time, you can visit both in one full day, but it is better to devote a full day to each if you really want to soak up their charm and discover their secrets.
Xidi and Hongcun are important ancient villages listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. They are famous for their well-preserved traditional Anhui architecture from the Ming and Qing periods, their intricate wood carvings, and their waterside scenery, such as Hongcun’s half-moon ponds. They represent harmony between people and nature, as well as traditional Chinese life. You can find more details on the UNESCO page.
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the best seasons to visit, with pleasant temperatures and beautiful scenery. To avoid crowds and enjoy the peace and quiet, I suggest going early in the morning, just after opening, or late in the afternoon. The light at those times is also ideal for photography.
Unfortunately, accessibility can be challenging. The villages have uneven stone streets, narrow bridges, and stairs that can make wheelchair access or movement difficult for people with reduced mobility. While some areas are passable, many historic houses are not adapted. Caution is recommended and, if necessary, bring a companion.
Yes, absolutely! The main attraction in the surrounding area is Huangshan Mountain, a world-famous natural wonder that you should not miss. You can also consider visiting Tunxi (Huangshan City) with its picturesque old street, or the Huashan Grottoes National Geological Park. Explore the options in the Huangshan attractions guide.
I recommend wearing comfortable shoes for walking along the cobbled streets. Do not forget your camera — the villages are incredibly photogenic! Try the local food, especially Anhui snacks. Consider hiring a local guide at the entrance; they will reveal stories and details you would otherwise miss. And above all, take your time to wander and soak up the atmosphere.
