Yongquan Temple is a majestic Buddhist complex with a rich history and deep spiritual significance, nestled on the serene slopes of Gushan Mountain.
The temple generally opens from 6:30 AM to 5:30 PM every day. To get there, head to the base of Gushan Mountain in Fuzhou, where you can either hike up or take the cable car, which offers spectacular views on the way up.
Entry to the temple costs approximately 40 RMB (about 5–6 USD), payable at the entrance to the monastic complex. Please note that the cable car up the mountain is charged separately.
We recommend allowing between 1.5 and 2 hours for the temple itself if you want to appreciate the architectural details and atmosphere. If you include the cable car ride or hike up and down, plan for half a day.
Founded in 908, it is famous for its 'Three Treasures': the thousand-year-old ceramic pagodas, Buddhist scriptures, and woodblocks. It is an architectural gem that blends perfectly with nature, known as the temple where 'the beams cannot be seen.'
The best time to visit is early in the morning, around 8:00 or 9:00 AM, to experience the peace of the place before tour groups arrive. Spring and autumn offer the most pleasant weather for enjoying the natural surroundings.
Access is difficult; although the cable car brings you closer, the temple itself has many steps, high thresholds, and uneven levels typical of an old mountain structure, so it is not fully wheelchair accessible.
Since it is located on Gushan Mountain, you can also visit viewpoints with panoramic views over the city of Fuzhou and the many stone inscriptions along the mountain trails.
Do not miss the vegetarian lunch served by the monks in the temple dining hall; it is an authentic and affordable culinary experience. Also, wear very comfortable shoes so you can explore the surroundings without getting tired.
