A majestic city wall with centuries of history, rebuilt to inspire and protect the essence of Datong.
The Datong Ancient City Wall is usually open from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. It can be accessed through several gates, with the South Gate (Yongtai Gate) being the most popular. We recommend buying your tickets at the main entrance for easier access. For more details, you can visit the China Highlights page about the wall.
General admission to the Datong Ancient City Wall costs approximately 30-50 CNY per person. Discounts are often available for students, seniors, and children, so be sure to bring valid identification if you qualify for any of them. Prices may vary, so it is always a good idea to confirm on site.
To fully walk the wall’s 7 kilometers, at least 2 to 3 hours are recommended, especially if you want to stop to admire the views and the architecture of the towers. If you only want to stroll along one section, one hour could be enough for a rewarding experience.
The Datong Ancient City Wall is an impressive example of Ming dynasty fortification, originally built more than 600 years ago and meticulously restored in the 21st century. It represents the defensive heart of the ancient northern capital and stands as a testament to China’s rich cultural and military history. More historical information is available at TravelChinaGuide.
Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are the best seasons to visit because of the pleasant temperatures. As for the best time of day, sunrise or sunset offers the most spectacular light for photography and a quieter experience with fewer crowds.
Because of its historic structure with multiple steps and uneven surfaces, wheelchair accessibility is limited in some sections of the wall. However, some of the main entrances may have ramps or partial elevator access. It is always advisable to contact the local administration for specific accessibility information before your visit.
Plenty! While in Datong, you should not miss the Yungang Grottoes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, or the impressive Hanging Temple (Xuankong Temple), just a short drive away. Within the city itself, Huayan Temple and Shanhua Monastery are also must-see visits.
Of course. Here are a few: wear comfortable walking shoes, bring sunscreen and a hat, and consider renting a bicycle at one of the gates to get around more easily. Also, do not forget to bring water, especially if you visit in summer, and keep your camera ready to capture the stunning views.
