Since this is a tour of the city and the waterfront, it is an open public space 24 hours a day. However, to enter the iconic Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, the usual visiting hours are Monday to Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., subject to religious services.
Access to the city, the promenade along Lake Llanquihue, and the viewing of the heritage houses is completely free. Only some private attractions or specific museums may charge a fee, but the essential tour is free of charge.
To enjoy a relaxed walk that includes Philippi Hill, the main square, the church, and the waterfront, we recommend setting aside between 3 and 4 hours. This will allow you to take photos of Osorno Volcano and enjoy the local cuisine without rushing.
Puerto Varas was founded in 1853 by German immigrants during the government of Manuel Montt. This colonization left an unforgettable mark on its architecture, gastronomy, and culture, with the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church as a symbol inspired by the Marienkirche in the Black Forest.
The high season is during the southern summer, from December to March, when the weather is warmer and there is less rain. However, visiting in spring or autumn offers incredible colors and fewer crowds, although you should be prepared for occasional rain.
The waterfront and the central area around the main square are quite flat and paved, making wheelchair access easier. However, some heritage areas or viewpoints such as Philippi Hill have steep slopes that may require assistance.
Puerto Varas is an excellent strategic base; from here you can visit the famous Petrohué Falls, go up to the Osorno Volcano ski center, or explore the charming town of Frutillar along the lakeshore.
The weather in the Los Lagos region is changeable, so the key is to dress in layers and always bring a light waterproof jacket. Also, do not leave without trying a piece of kuchen or strudel in one of the traditional cafés by the lake.
