The fair is open every day of the year from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., although hours may be extended during the high season. To get there, take a bus from Castro or Ancud to Dalcahue, or drive along the coastal route; pedestrian access is from the main pier. More details are available on the Dalcahue Municipality website.
Admission to the fair is completely free, as it is a market open to the public. You only pay for the crafts you buy, with affordable prices starting at 5,000 CLP for small items. If you are looking for discounts, ask the local artisans directly.
It is recommended to spend at least 1 to 2 hours exploring the stalls and enjoying the atmosphere. If you plan to shop and chat with the vendors, you could extend your visit to 3 hours. It is a compact place, ideal for a relaxed morning visit.
The fair is a pillar of Chilote culture, highlighting the Indigenous and mixed-heritage traditions of Chiloé through woodcraft, textiles, and basketry that reflect local myths. It began in the 19th century as a barter market and today preserves the island’s identity. To learn more, visit the Chile Travel portal.
The best time is summer, from December to March, when there is more activity and sunny weather in Chiloé. Go early in the morning, around 10:00 a.m., to avoid crowds and see the artisans setting up their stalls. In winter, be prepared for cooler days.
The main access is pedestrian and partially accessible, with paved paths near the pier, but some stilt-house stalls have uneven steps. I recommend contacting the municipality at +56 65 266 2000 for assistance or alternative routes. It is not fully ADA-compliant, so wear comfortable shoes.
Nearby you will find Dalcahue Church, a UNESCO wooden treasure just a 5-minute walk away, and the stilt houses by the pier with sea views. You can also explore Quinchao Island, 10 km away, for more Chilote tradition. For itineraries, check the Sernatur website.
Bring cash in Chilean pesos, as not all stalls accept cards, and bargain politely for better prices. Try local seafood from nearby vendors and use sunscreen because of the coastal wind. If you are going in a group, arrange return transportation early to avoid the short sunsets.
