Fort San Antonio operates as an open historical park, so access is public and it can be visited every day of the week, generally during daylight hours between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. It is located on San Antonio Street, northeast of the city, and it is very easy to reach on foot or by vehicle from downtown Ancud.
Admission to Fort San Antonio is completely free, making it a must-see if you are looking for budget-friendly activities in Ancud. You can walk along its walls, see the cannons, and enjoy the viewpoints at no cost.
A complete visit usually lasts between 45 minutes and 1 hour, which is enough time to walk the paths, read the informational plaques, and take photographs. If you are passionate about history or want to calmly enjoy the sunset, we recommend setting aside at least one hour.
Built in 1770, this fort was the last bastion of the Spanish Crown in South America, playing a key role in the annexation of Chiloé to Chile. It is a site full of history where original bronze cannons are still preserved, pointing toward the entrance of the bay to defend the city.
The best season is summer (December to March) for a greater chance of clear days, and the best time of day is undoubtedly sunset. The views of the sun disappearing over the Pacific Ocean from the walls offer an unmatched visual spectacle.
The site has paved paths that run through much of the park, making it easier for wheelchairs and strollers to get around. However, as it is an old fortification on elevated ground, some sections may have steep slopes that require assistance.
A few blocks away you will find the Ancud Regional Museum, ideal for complementing the history of the fort. We also recommend visiting the Municipal Market to try local cuisine and the Plaza de Armas, both within walking distance.
The weather in Chiloé is unpredictable, so always bring a waterproof or windproof jacket, as the fort is exposed to sea breezes. Wear comfortable walking shoes and make sure your camera battery is charged, because you will want to photograph the old cannons and the panoramic view of the city.
