La torre de un inmigrante alemán que buscó el cielo chileno para sanar su corazón roto
Bauer Tower is located in Vicuña’s Plaza de Armas, and its exterior is accessible 24 hours a day. Although it does not offer interior visits except during special events, its impressive architecture can be admired at any time. You can freely stroll around the surrounding area.
The good news is that visiting Bauer Tower is completely free! Since it is located in a public space such as Plaza de Armas, there is no admission fee, making it an attraction accessible to everyone.
To admire and photograph Bauer Tower, and enjoy the atmosphere of Plaza de Armas, we recommend setting aside between 15 and 30 minutes. If you take your time observing its architectural details and the life around it, your visit may last a little longer.
Bauer Tower was built in 1905 by Mayor Adolfo Bauer. Its design was inspired by London’s famous Big Ben, though with a local touch. It is an iconic architectural symbol of Vicuña and the region, a testament to the city’s history and progress. Although it is not as old as other historic structures, its value lies in its uniqueness and in being a landmark in the Elqui Valley.
Bauer Tower can be visited all year round. However, to enjoy spectacular light and avoid the intense summer heat, we suggest visiting at sunset, when the golden light enhances its beauty. The spring months (September to November) and autumn (March to May) also offer very pleasant weather.
Yes, since it is located in Vicuña’s Plaza de Armas, the exterior access to Bauer Tower is completely flat and accessible for wheelchair users and people with reduced mobility. There are no obstacles preventing you from enjoying the view from the outside. However, there is no interior access for visitors.
Once you have admired Bauer Tower, you can explore the Gabriela Mistral House Museum, the Guayacán Brewery, the Mamalluca Observatory (just outside town), or simply enjoy the local shops and restaurants in central Vicuña. All of this is within easy walking distance.
We recommend bringing your camera to capture its imposing silhouette. Also, take the opportunity to sit on one of the square’s benches, enjoy the local atmosphere, and watch everyday life in Vicuña go by. If you visit at night, the tower’s special lighting gives it a magical touch. Don’t forget to enjoy a local artisanal ice cream while you stroll!
