Discover Piedras Rojas in San Pedro de Atacama. A unique experience to learn about its history and significance.
Piedras Rojas, in Los Flamencos National Reserve (Soncor sector), is open all day, 365 days a year, but it is recommended to visit early to avoid the heat. You can get there by car via route B-355 (about 40 minutes from San Pedro), by bicycle, or with organized tours; access is via a gravel road suitable for 4x4 vehicles. More info on the official CONAF website.
Admission to Los Flamencos Reserve (which includes Piedras Rojas) costs around CLP 5,000 for Chileans and CLP 10,000 for foreigners (approximate 2023 prices; check for updates). Children and seniors receive discounts; pay at the Soncor sector entrance. Check updated rates at sanpedroatacama.cl.
An ideal visit lasts between 1 and 2 hours, enough time to walk among the rock formations, lagoons, and observe flamingos. If you combine it with other areas of the reserve, allow half a day. Leave extra time for sunset photos.
Piedras Rojas is part of Los Flamencos Reserve, with reddish volcanic formations created by iron oxidation millions of years ago, and it contains salt lagoons with three species of flamingos. It has ecological and cultural importance for Atacameño communities, symbolizing high-altitude biodiversity. Protected by CONAF since 1990.
The best time is from May to October (dry winter) for clear skies and less wind; avoid summer (December to March) because of intense heat. Go early in the morning or at sunset for magical light and fewer tourists. Check the forecast at Meteochile.
The main access is via a gravel road and the boardwalks are wooden with some steps, so it is not fully accessible for wheelchairs. There are viewpoints near the parking area with partial views; choose adapted tours if needed. Contact CONAF at +56 9 9324 6529 for specific information.
Nearby are Miscanti and Miñiques Lagoons (1 hour), the Atacama Salt Flat and Ojos del Salar (30 min), and the Tara Salt Flat. In San Pedro, do not miss Moon Valley. Combine them in a full-day tour; see maps at Atacama Travel.
Bring sunscreen, a hat, plenty of water, and snacks, as there are no services on site; wear comfortable shoes for the uneven terrain. Keep your distance from flamingos and do not leave trash behind.
