¿Sabías que en estas islas del Danubio hubo un gulag búlgaro donde miles sufrieron, y hoy pelícanos gigantes custodian sus secretos?
The reserve is open year-round, 24 hours a day, although visiting during daylight is recommended for better safety and visibility. You can arrive by car via the main road from Svishtov, or by public transport to the town and then by taxi or on foot; there is a visitor center in the village of Belene nearby. For more details, check the official Persina Nature Park website: persinapark.org.
Entry to the reserve is free, as it is a protected natural area open to the public. However, if you choose guided tours or visits to the interpretation center, small fees of around 5-10 Bulgarian lev per person may apply. Check for updates on Bulgaria's tourism website: bulgariatravel.org.
It is recommended to allow at least 2-3 hours for a basic walk along the trails and birdwatching, but if you plan a fuller route including the Danube River, it could extend to 4-5 hours. Adjust according to your pace and whether you bring equipment such as binoculars to make the most of the experience.
Established in 1982 as a nature reserve and upgraded to a nature park in 2003, Persina is a key wetland on the Danube, home to more than 250 bird species and part of the EU Natura 2000 Network, highlighting its importance for biodiversity conservation in the Balkans. It represents a unique ecosystem that preserves the region's endemic flora and fauna.
Spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October) are ideal for seeing bird migration and blooming flora, with pleasant temperatures around 15-25°C. Avoid the height of summer because of the intense heat, and winter if you are looking for hiking, although it offers unique snowy landscapes.
Some of the main trails are accessible, with paved or fine gravel paths, but much of the terrain is natural and unsuitable for wheelchairs due to uneven ground and vegetation. It is advisable to contact the visitor center for adapted routes or assistance; phone: +359 658 200 01.
Nearby, in Svishtov, you can visit the Regional History Museum or the Ivan Vazov House Museum, and about 20 km away is Nicopolis ad Istrum, an impressive Roman archaeological site. For more options, explore the Danube River by ferry toward Romania or visit Belene Monastery.
Bring insect repellent, sunscreen, water, and comfortable shoes for the trails; binoculars are essential for birdwatching. Follow leave-no-trace rules and join a guided tour if you are a beginner in nature observation; book in advance at persinapark.org/en/visit.
