The monument is usually open every day from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM in winter and until 7:00 PM in summer. Access is via Shipka Pass and, after parking, be prepared to climb the iconic 890 steps that lead to the top.
Walking around the monument and enjoying the panoramic views is completely free. To enter the museum tower there is a very affordable fee (approx. 2–3 EUR), well worth paying to see the historical artifacts.
I recommend allowing between an hour and a half and two hours. This will give you enough time to climb the stairs at a relaxed pace, explore the interior museum, and enjoy the views with our audio guide.
This site commemorates the heroic defense of Shipka Pass in 1877, a decisive turning point in the Russo-Turkish War. It is the sacred symbol of Bulgaria’s liberation from Ottoman rule and a place of national pilgrimage.
Clear spring or summer days are ideal for appreciating the views stretching across northern and southern Bulgaria. Try to go early in the morning to avoid the heat during the climb and the midday crowds.
Unfortunately, the main access requires climbing many steps, which makes it very difficult for wheelchair users. There is a paved road to the base of the monument, but the final access to the museum has architectural barriers.
You are in a strategic area: do not miss the impressive Shipka Memorial Church with its golden domes at the foot of the mountain. You are also very close to the famous Buzludzha Monument and the Thracian Tombs of Kazanlak.
Wear comfortable shoes for the climb and bring a windproof jacket, as it is always very windy at the top. To understand what you are seeing without reading boring signs, we suggest using a good audio guide.
