A hidden gem in Sozopol, Saint Zoni Chapel is a living testament to the region's rich history and unwavering faith, a place where time seems to stand still.
The chapel is usually open daily from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM during high season (May-September), with shorter hours in winter. No reservation is needed, but we recommend checking availability with the Sozopol Tourist Office: official website. It is easily reached on foot from the old town.
It is generally free, although donations for its upkeep are appreciated (1-2 Bulgarian leva in cash). During special religious celebrations, access may be restricted.
The interior visit takes about 15-20 minutes, as it is a small chapel. We suggest allowing 1 hour if you also explore the surroundings and take photographs of the stunning Aegean Sea from its location.
Built in 1850 on ancient Byzantine foundations, it is a testament to Orthodox Christianity in the region. It stands out for preserving 19th-century religious icons and for its connection to the local fishing community.
Visit in May-June or September to avoid crowds. The best time of day is at sunrise or late afternoon, when the light highlights its white architecture above the sea.
Access presents challenges: uneven steps at the main entrance and surrounding cobblestone paving. The alternative entrance at the rear (Apolon Street) offers better access. Check in advance at +359 55 222 233.
Less than a 10-minute walk away you will find: the Church of the Virgin Mary (18th-century iconostasis), the Archaeological Museum, Harmanite Beach, and the medieval walls of the old town. Detailed map: location on Google Maps.
1) Dress modestly as it is a place of worship 2) Wear comfortable shoes for cobbled streets 3) Bring cash in leva for donations 4) Take the opportunity to try fresh fish at nearby taverns such as "Ahtopol" 5) Look for the commemorative plaque for the 2017 restoration on the facade.
