Cadena montañosa en el centro de Bulgaria, famosa por sus bosques densos, biodiversidad única y un legado histórico que fusiona naturaleza y cultura humana.
As a natural mountain range, access is open 24 hours a day, year-round. You can easily get there by car or taxi from central Sopot, heading south toward the Valley of Roses to find the start of the hiking trails.
Access for hiking in the Sredna Gora Mountains is completely free. You only need a budget if you plan to use private transport or visit specific museums in nearby base towns such as Sopot.
To enjoy a moderate hike and panoramic valley views, we recommend setting aside 3 to 5 hours. If you want to explore deeper trails or have a picnic, consider spending the whole day.
This region is a cradle of the Bulgarian National Revival and an important setting of the April Uprising; the mountains served as a refuge for revolutionaries. In addition, Sopot is the birthplace of the patriarch of Bulgarian literature, Ivan Vazov.
The best time is spring (May-June), when the weather is mild and the Valley of Roses at the foot of the mountains is in full bloom. Autumn also offers spectacular colors and ideal temperatures for hiking.
Because of the uneven terrain and natural mountain trails, most routes are not wheelchair accessible. It is recommended to enjoy the views from the flatter points on the outskirts of Sopot.
Do not miss the Ivan Vazov House Museum in the town center. It is also very popular to ride the Sopot chairlift to view the opposite mountain range, the Balkan Mountains.
Bring sturdy hiking shoes, enough water, and sunscreen, as some areas have very little shade. We also recommend downloading offline maps before setting out, since phone signal can be unreliable in the higher areas.
