An architectural and spiritual gem in Shumen, this Bulgarian Orthodox church stands as a vibrant testament to local culture and faith.
The church is open daily from 8:00 to 18:00. On Sundays and public holidays, religious services are held (see the Bulgarian Holy Synod), so it is advisable to plan tourist visits outside those times.
Admission is free, although donations for the upkeep of the church are appreciated. It is advisable to bring cash if you wish to contribute or light candles (1-2 BGN per candle).
We recommend allowing 30 to 45 minutes. This gives you time to appreciate the frescoes, the iconostasis, and the peaceful atmosphere, as well as time for discreet photographs.
Built in 1850, it is a symbol of the Bulgarian National Revival and represents Orthodox resilience during Ottoman rule. Its architecture combines Byzantine influences with traditional Balkan elements.
Early morning (8:00-10:00) or late afternoon (16:30-18:00). Avoid Sunday mornings if you are looking for quiet, while in September and October you will enjoy milder temperatures.
There are 3 steps at the main entrance and historic uneven floors. There are no ramps or lifts, so access is limited for visitors with reduced mobility.
Less than 10 minutes away by car: the monumental 1300 Years of Bulgaria (a Soviet-era landmark), the Shumen Fortress (medieval), and the Regional Museum of History with Thracian art.
1) Modest clothing (shoulders and knees covered) 2) Silence during services 3) Photography WITHOUT flash allowed 4) Euros/BGN for donations. There is a souvenir shop next to the atrium. Visitor assistance phone: +359 54 858 432.
