Discover the rich history and cultural heritage of Targovishte through its artifacts and exhibitions.
The museum is generally open Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and on Saturdays it usually has reduced hours until midday (it is advisable to check before visiting). It is centrally located on Mitropolt Andrey Boulevard, an easily accessible spot in the city. You can check the exact location here: View location on Google Maps.
Admission is very affordable, generally around 3 to 5 Bulgarian leva (BGN) for adults, with discounts available for students and retirees. There are often combined tickets that also give you access to the Slaveykov School and the Hadzhi Angel House, which are part of the museum complex.
A thorough visit to the main building usually takes between 60 and 90 minutes to properly appreciate the archaeological and ethnographic exhibitions. If you also plan to visit the adjoining historic houses or the old school, we suggest setting aside at least 2.5 hours in your itinerary.
Without a doubt, the crown jewel is the Kralevo Gold Treasure (from the Thracian period, 3rd century BC), discovered in 1979. This find is essential for understanding the wealth of the Getae civilization in the region and is the centerpiece that alone justifies the visit.
Weekday mornings are ideal if you are looking for a quiet visit and want to avoid school groups. As for the best season, spring and early autumn offer perfect weather to also enjoy the museum’s surroundings and the city of Targovishte.
The museum’s main building has made improvements for accessibility on the ground floor, although some areas and adjoining historic houses may present architectural barriers due to their age. It is recommended to contact the museum in advance or ask the staff at the entrance for assistance.
Within a short distance, you can visit the picturesque Varosha district and the Church of the Dormition of the Virgin. In addition, a few kilometers from the city, a visit to the ancient fortress of the Roman and medieval city of Missionis is a must.
We recommend bringing cash (local currency BGN) for tickets and souvenirs, as cards are not always accepted. Since not all signage is in English, having an audio guide or reading about the Thracian context beforehand will greatly enrich your understanding of what you are seeing.
