Antigua fortaleza medieval enclavada en la colina Hisarlaka de Petrich, Bulgaria, construida en el siglo X por el zar Samuel como bastión del Primer Imperio Búlgaro contra las invasiones bizantinas.
The fortress is open daily from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM (April-October) and until 5:00 PM in winter. It can be reached by car from Petrich (12 km), with free parking available. We recommend confirming hours before your visit at Petrich Tourism or by calling +359 874 232 111.
General admission costs approximately 5 BGN (€2.50). Children and students pay 2 BGN. There are discounts for groups of more than 10 people. Check updated rates at Petrich History Museum.
It is recommended to allow 1.5 to 2 hours to explore the ruins, read the information panels, and enjoy the panoramic views of the Pirin and Belasitsa Mountains.
It was a capital of the Bulgarian Empire under Tsar Samuil (10th-11th century). The relic of Saint Ivan of Rila, taken by Samuil, was found here. Its 3-meter defensive wall remains impressive.
Spring (May-June) and autumn (September-October) offer mild temperatures. In summer, visit early in the morning or at sunset to avoid the heat. The sunsets are spectacular!
The terrain is uneven with steep slopes, which limits accessibility. However, there are viewpoints accessible by car with views of the ruins and the Strumeshnitsa Valley.
About 10 km away is Saint George Hill, with a church and panoramic views. Do not miss the Sandanski Museum (35 km) or the thermal springs of Rupite (15 km).
Wear comfortable walking shoes, bring sun protection, and carry water. Mornings are less crowded. If you buy a combined ticket with the Petrich Museum (8 km), you get a discount.
