Donde los gladiadores rezaban antes de combatir y los dioses jugaban a los dados con la historia
The archaeological site of Heraclea Sintica (the sanctuary) is usually open every day from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM in summer and until 5:00 PM in winter. The best way to get there is by car from Petrich (about 10 km) toward the village of Rupite, following the brown tourist signs. See location on Google Maps.
Admission is not free, but the fee is symbolic and helps support the maintenance of the excavations. The price is around 2 to 4 BGN (Bulgarian lev) per person, with discounts for students and groups, making it a minimal investment for the historical value the site offers.
I recommend setting aside between 60 and 90 minutes to walk along the pathways and observe the details of the excavations without rushing. If you are passionate about ancient history, you may want to stay a bit longer to read all the information panels.
This place is the ancient city of Heraclea Sintica, lost for centuries and rediscovered only recently. It was a key city founded by Philip II of Macedon and named in honor of the mythical hero Heracles (Hercules), serving as a vital strategic and commercial center in antiquity.
Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are perfect thanks to the mild weather. If you go in summer, try to arrive early in the morning (9:00 AM), as Petrich is one of the hottest areas in Bulgaria and there is hardly any shade among the ruins.
Because this is an archaeological excavation on natural terrain, accessibility is limited and the ground is uneven. However, there are viewing platforms from which you can enjoy a panoramic view of the sanctuary without needing to use the more difficult paths.
You are literally next to Rupite, a mystical place famous for the home of the prophet Baba Vanga and its healing hot springs. I also recommend visiting the Petrich History Museum to see the artifacts found at the sanctuary.
Wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes, as you will be walking on dirt and stones, and do not forget your water bottle and sunscreen. For an immersive experience, I suggest using an audio guide that tells you the hidden stories of the stones as you walk. Discover more about audio guides here.
