Un vasto oasis natural en el suroeste de Bulgaria, con montañas cubiertas de bosques centenarios, diversidad biológica única y senderos que revelan la esencia salvaje de los Balcanes.
The park is open year-round, but the best access is from April to October. There are no strict opening hours, but daytime visits are recommended for safety. It can be reached from Petrich (15 km) by car or taxi to one of the main trailheads such as Kongur. For more route details, see Bulgarian Society for Protection of Birds.
Access to the park is completely free. However, if you hire a local guide for specialized routes or visits to Saint George Monastery inside the park, there may be additional costs. The visitor center in Petrich can advise you about services.
Ideally, you should allow at least half a day. Basic routes, such as the Kongurska River trail, take 3 to 4 hours, while longer circuits like the Radomir summit in Belasitsa require 6 to 8 hours. There are options for all levels.
Belasitsa is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve thanks to its unique Balkan fir forests, which cover 30% of the area, and its 120 endemic species. It is home to 120 rivers and 70% of Bulgaria’s butterfly species. More information is available at UNESCO Belasitsa.
Spring, from April to June, is ideal for wildflowers and waterfalls, while autumn, from September to October, offers mild temperatures. Avoid July and August because of extreme heat, up to 40°C, and winter because of snow at higher elevations. Mornings are ideal for spotting wildlife such as deer.
The main paths to the waterfalls can be difficult because of uneven ground with roots and rocks. The monastery area offers better accessibility. Check with the visitor centers in Petrich at +359 7452 2330 or consider adapted routes near the foot of the mountain.
In Petrich, do not miss Samuil's Fortress from the 11th century, the Vanga House Museum, and the village of Rupite with its hot springs, 8 km away. Forty minutes away is Melnik, famous for its vineyards and sand houses.
Wear non-slip hiking shoes and bring water, at least 1.5 liters per person, sunscreen, and a hat. There are natural drinking-water springs along marked routes. Register your route at the visitor center and avoid leaving the marked trails, as they cross protected areas.
