A stunning rocky cape on the Black Sea, steeped in history, legend, and spectacular natural beauty.
The complex is usually open every day, generally from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM during the high summer season. Access is via a single road from Kavarna, and you can drive right up to the fortress gate; you can check its exact location on Google Maps.
Admission is not free, but it is very inexpensive: the price is around 3 BGN (Bulgarian leva) per adult, with reduced rates for students and children. It is advisable to carry cash in the local currency, as cards are not always accepted at the ticket office.
To enjoy the views, visit the small cave museum, the chapel, and explore the ruins at a relaxed pace, it is ideal to set aside between 1 hour and 1 hour 30 minutes. If you enjoy photography or plan to watch the sunset, you may want to stay a little longer.
This place breathes history and tragedy; it is famous for the legend of the 40 Bulgarian maidens who tied their hair together and jumped into the sea to avoid being captured by the Ottomans. In addition, it preserves remains of Thracian, Roman, and medieval fortifications that were crucial to the defense of the Black Sea.
Without a doubt, sunset is the magical time to visit Kaliakra because of the spectacular views of the sun sinking into the sea. The best season is between May and September, when the weather is warmer and the wind, though constant, is more pleasant.
There is a main paved path that covers much of the cape and allows wheelchairs to pass up to a certain point, where the restaurant and museum are located. However, reaching the outermost ruins or secondary trails can be difficult due to the uneven terrain.
Very close by is the beautiful Bolata Bay beach, perfect for a swim. You are also near the town of Balchik, famous for its Palace and Botanical Garden.
Always bring a windproof jacket, even in summer, as the wind on the cape is strong and constant. Wear comfortable shoes for walking on the stones, and do not forget your camera, as with luck you may spot dolphins in the sea from the cliffs.
