As it is a nature park, access to the trails, forests and viewpoints is open 24 hours a day all year round, free of charge. To reach the heart of the park, the most convenient option is to drive in from the town of Gabrovo or by crossing the famous Shipka mountain pass.
Entry to the territory of Bulgarka Nature Park is completely free, so you can enjoy nature and the hiking routes at no cost. However, keep in mind that specific attractions within or next to its boundaries, such as the Etar Museum, do require the purchase of a ticket.
For a full visit that includes the Shipka Monument, a short walk around the Uzana area and the panoramic views, we suggest setting aside a whole day. If you are just passing through while crossing the Balkans and making quick stops, you will need at least 3 to 4 hours.
This place is legendary because it is home to the Shipka Pass, the setting of the most decisive battles for the liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman rule in the 19th century. It is a site steeped in patriotism, where military history merges with a biodiversity unique to the Balkans.
If you are after hiking and photography, the months from May to October are ideal thanks to the mild climate and the greenery of the beech forests. If you prefer winter sports, the Uzana area (the geographic centre of Bulgaria) is perfect to visit between December and March.
Due to the mountainous terrain, most of the natural trails are not wheelchair accessible. However, you can drive right up to the Uzana recreation area and to the car parks of the main monuments, although reaching the latter usually involves climbing steps.
You are in a key tourist area; do not miss the beautiful Sokolski Monastery or the open-air ethnographic complex of Etar. A short distance away you will also find the architectural reserve of Bozhentsi, a village that seems frozen in time.
The weather in the Balkan Mountains changes quickly, so always bring warm clothing in layers and sturdy footwear, even in summer. We recommend carrying water and snacks, and downloading an audio guide or offline maps, as mobile coverage can be intermittent in the forest.
