A spiritual retreat in the tropical paradise of Praia dos Carneiros, blending faith, history, and nature.
The chapel is open to the public every day from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (subject to change). To reach it, you must walk 10 minutes along the beach from Praia dos Carneiros at low tide or arrive by small boat at high tide. Check updated hours on the official Pernambuco tourism website.
Visiting the chapel itself is free, but the main access passes through private land where they usually charge 10-15 BRL per person (about 2-3 USD). No reservation is required, but we recommend bringing cash.
The chapel itself can be visited in 20-30 minutes. However, we suggest setting aside half a day to also enjoy the white-sand beach, the palm trees, and the sandbanks that appear at low tide.
Built in 1998 by the fisherman Sílvio Lúcio, it is a cultural symbol that combines neoclassical architecture with local elements such as a thatched roof. It represents the devotion of fishermen to Saint Benedict, patron saint of protection at sea.
The dry season (June to September) is ideal, with less rain. Visit at sunrise (6:00-8:00 a.m.) to see it lit by golden light and without crowds. Check the tide tables, because at high tide it is accessible only by boat.
Unfortunately, it is not accessible. You need to walk on soft sand or climb steep steps from the boats. Inside, the space is small (only 10 m²) with uneven flooring.
Must-sees: 1) Praia dos Carneiros with its natural pools, 2) a jangada boat trip to Maragogi (white sand and turquoise waters), 3) Tassoa Restaurant with its famous fish fritter. More info at Costa dos Corais Guide.
1) Wear footwear that can get wet, 2) Bring sunscreen and a hat (there is no shade on the way), 3) Take photos from the sea to capture the iconic view with palm trees, 4) Avoid weekends if you want fewer people, 5) If you go by car, park at the Wind Farm (5 BRL/day).
