Un paraíso tropical en el noreste de Brasil, famosa por sus aguas cristalinas de tonos turquesa, cocoteros ondulantes y una capilla colonial que añade un toque histórico a su belleza natural.
The beach is open 24 hours a day, but visiting during daylight is recommended for safety and to enjoy the sun. You can get there by car via PE-60 from Recife (about 2 hours), by bus to Tamandaré, or on an organized tour; parking costs around R$10-20. Check the official map on Google Maps.
Access to the beach is free, but there is a conservation fee of about R$15-25 per adult to help maintain the area (children free). In addition, umbrella and chair rentals cost R$50-100 per day, and parking is R$10-20. Check updated prices on Pernambuco's tourism website: Setur PE.
It is recommended to set aside at least 3-4 hours to enjoy the sea, swim, and relax, but a full day is ideal if you want to explore restaurants and the chapel. Arrive early to avoid crowds and make the most of your beach time.
Named after the Carneiro Leão family, who owned the land in the 18th century, the beach is known for Saint Benedict Chapel, built in 1750 as a vow for protection against pirates. It is a cultural icon of Pernambuco, representing Portuguese colonial heritage and the natural beauty of northeastern Brazil.
The best period is the dry season from May to October, with less rain and calmer waters; avoid January to March because of heavier rainfall. During the day, go early in the morning (8-10 am) for calmer waters and fewer tourists.
The main access is through loose sand, which makes it difficult for standard wheelchairs, but there are paved paths near the chapel and some restaurants with ramps. Contact tour operators for adapted options or to rent all-terrain vehicles; more info at Tamandaré City Hall.
Nearby are Porto de Galinhas (30 minutes by car, with natural pools), Maragogi (1 hour, known as the 'Brazilian Caribbean'), and Fort Orange in Porto de Galinhas. You can also visit Recife (1.5 hours) for colonial history. Plan an itinerary at Visit Pernambuco.
Bring sunscreen, insect repellent, water, and cash (there are few ATMs); reserve an umbrella in advance on weekends. Try the fresh seafood at the beach restaurants and go at low tide to walk farther out. Emergency number: 193 (SAMU).
