Un fuerte portugués en el paraíso de Fernando de Noronha que vio piratas frustrados, soldados solitarios y cañones mudos: ¿guardará secretos en sus muros?
The fort is generally open every day from 10:00 a.m. to midnight, as it houses a cultural and dining space. Access is on foot from Vila dos Remédios, climbing a somewhat steep cobbled path; you can see the exact location on Google Maps.
Admission to visit the historic ruins and enjoy the view is free; you do not need to buy a specific ticket for the fort. However, remember that to enter the island you will already have paid the mandatory Environmental Preservation Fee on the official Fernando de Noronha website.
I recommend setting aside between one and a half and two hours for your visit. This will give you enough time to walk around the walls at a relaxed pace, read about its history, and above all enjoy the panoramic views without rushing.
Built in 1737 on top of former Dutch ruins, it was the largest defensive structure in the archipelago, created to protect against invasions. It is an icon of Portuguese military architecture and was key to consolidating territorial control in this part of the Atlantic.
Without a doubt, the best time is late afternoon, around 5:00 p.m. You will be able to see the architecture in daylight and stay to witness one of the most spectacular sunsets in all of Brazil, with the sun setting over Morro do Pico.
Unfortunately, access is not suitable for people with reduced mobility. The terrain is uneven, and the climb from the main square is quite steep with original stone paving, which makes wheelchair access extremely difficult.
You are in the historic heart of the island, so on the way down you can visit the Church of Our Lady of Remedies. You are also very close to the path down to Cachorro Beach, ideal for cooling off after the walk.
Do not go up in flip-flops or loose sandals; the path is slippery and steep, so wear comfortable sports shoes. Bring water, sunscreen, and take it slowly; the effort of the climb is fully rewarded by the 360-degree view.
