A hidden natural paradise in Ilhabela, where the lush Atlantic Forest meets the striking beauty of a waterfall.
Cataratas do Gato is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, since it is a natural site. Access is via a somewhat challenging trail from Castelhanos Beach. The best way to reach Castelhanos is in authorized 4x4 vehicles or through organized tours.
Access to Cataratas do Gato is completely free, as, like other natural attractions in Ilhabela, it does not have an entrance ticket system. However, if you hire a 4x4 tour to get to Castelhanos Beach, you will need to pay for that service.
Once you reach the base of the waterfall, the time you spend there is up to you. Generally, people spend from 30 minutes to 1 hour admiring the scenery, taking photos and, weather permitting, enjoying a refreshing swim in its waters. Keep in mind that the walk there from Castelhanos takes about 20 to 30 minutes on foot.
Cataratas do Gato is mainly known for its natural beauty rather than for a specific cultural history or local legends, as is often the case with other rock formations. Its name comes from the way the water falls, recalling the agile movement of a cat, and it is one of Ilhabela’s most visited natural treasures.
The best time to visit is during the dry season, from April to September, to avoid heavy rains that can make the trail more difficult. Early morning is ideal for enjoying the tranquility of the place and avoiding crowds, as well as for appreciating the sunlight on the waterfall.
Unfortunately, Cataratas do Gato is not accessible for people with reduced mobility or wheelchairs. The route involves an uneven, rocky trail from Castelhanos Beach, which can be steep and slippery in some sections, so it requires a good level of fitness.
When visiting Cataratas do Gato, you will be at beautiful Castelhanos Beach, one of Ilhabela’s wildest and most visited beaches. There you can enjoy the beach, try local food at the kiosks, or explore other nearby trails leading to viewpoints and other waterfalls, such as the Heart Waterfall.
Of course. Here are some tips: bring insect repellent (especially against Ilhabela’s famous black flies), sunscreen, enough water, snacks, and wear comfortable, non-slip footwear for the trail. If you plan to swim, don’t forget your swimsuit. And of course, bring your camera to capture the beauty of the place!
