An ancient Portuguese military fortress guarding the entrance to the Cabo Frio channel, bearing witness to centuries of history on the Brazilian coast.
The fort is open every day from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, allowing you to enjoy the sea breeze. To get there, walk to the far left end of the famous Forte Beach; access is on foot across the sand and up a small rocky rise.
I have excellent news! Admission is completely free, so you do not have to pay anything to visit this historic heritage site. It is one of the best free activities you can do in Cabo Frio.
The visit is fairly quick; 30 to 40 minutes is enough time to walk the walls, see the cannons, and take spectacular photos. If you are using an audio guide to explore the details more deeply, set aside a relaxed hour.
Built in 1616, it is one of the oldest fortifications in Brazil, erected to protect the coast from French, Dutch, and English invasions. It is a monument listed by IPHAN that bears witness to centuries of territorial defense and colonial military architecture.
Without a doubt, sunset is magical; watching the sun go down over the sea from the walls offers incredible light for your photos. However, if you want to avoid the crowds and enjoy the historic silence, I recommend going first thing in the morning, at 9:00 AM.
I should be honest: accessibility is difficult because this is a 17th-century structure set on natural rocks and sand. There are uneven stone steps and changes in level that make access very difficult for wheelchairs or baby strollers.
You are literally on Forte Beach, famous for its crystal-clear waters and white sand. In addition, a short walk or drive away, you can explore the charming Passage District, full of history and great food.
Wear shoes that fit securely on your feet (avoid slippery flip-flops) because you will be walking on uneven stones. Do not forget sunscreen, as there is not much shade, and bring your camera because the panoramic ocean views are unbeatable.
