The Prater, a vast green lung in Vienna, is much more than a park; it is a cultural icon that blends nature, history, and the timeless thrill of the Wurstelprater, its famous amusement park, crowned by the legendary Giant Ferris Wheel.
The Prater Park grounds are open 24 hours a day all year round for free strolling. The Giant Ferris Wheel, however, has specific opening hours that are usually from 10:00 to 21:45, with longer hours in summer.
Admission to the Prater grounds is completely free; you pay individually for each attraction you want to use. A ticket for the Giant Ferris Wheel costs approximately €13.50 for adults and €6.50 for children, and can be purchased at the ticket office or online.
A full ride on the Ferris wheel lasts between 12 and 15 minutes at a relaxed pace. To enjoy the atmosphere of the park, take photos, and perhaps try another attraction, we recommend allowing between 1.5 and 2 hours in total.
Built in 1897 for the Jubilee of Emperor Franz Joseph I, it is one of the oldest Ferris wheels in the world still in operation. It is a cultural icon that survived the war and gained worldwide fame thanks to the classic film 'The Third Man'.
If you want the best photos, ride at sunset to see Vienna bathed in golden light. If your priority is avoiding lines, we suggest going first thing in the morning (around 10:00) on weekdays.
Yes, the Giant Ferris Wheel is accessible and has special carriages designed to comfortably accommodate wheelchairs. The rest of Prater Park is mostly flat and paved, making it easy to get around.
Right on Riesenradplatz, opposite the Ferris wheel, you will find the wax museum Madame Tussauds Vienna. You can also explore the Green Prater, the immense adjacent wooded green area that is perfect for a picnic.
Buy your tickets online in advance to skip the ticket office line, especially in summer. Don’t forget to bring our downloaded audio guide so that, while the Ferris wheel turns, you know exactly which historic buildings you are seeing on the horizon.
