Embalse impresionante en el cañón del río Diamante, en San Rafael, Argentina, que combina ingeniería moderna con paisajes naturales espectaculares para el disfrute turístico y recreativo.
The dam is located about 35 km from the city of San Rafael and is reached mainly via Route 143 and then a paved access road. Although access to the viewpoint is public and unrestricted, the yacht clubs and activities usually operate from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM. You can see the exact route here: View location on Google Maps.
Access to the dam area and the panoramic views from the road is free. However, to enter the private clubs, use the lake access points, or camp, you must pay an entrance fee that varies by season and vehicle. It is recommended to bring cash, as the signal for electronic payments can be unreliable.
If you only want the panoramic photo, one hour is enough, but ideally you should dedicate at least half a day. This allows you to enjoy activities such as the catamaran ride, kayaking, or lunch with a lake view without rushing.
It is one of the few dams in South America with a reverse pumping system, allowing water to be returned to the reservoir to generate energy again. Its intense turquoise color and engineering make it a jewel of the Diamante River, essential for Mendoza’s irrigation and energy supply.
Summer (December to March) is ideal for enjoying water activities and swimming. It is recommended to arrive early in the morning, when the wind is gentle and the water looks like a mirror, perfect for boating and taking incredible photos.
Accessibility is limited due to the mountainous geography and the gravel and uneven ground in the campgrounds. However, you can drive to the main scenic viewpoints and the restaurant area of the clubs without needing long walks.
On the way back to the city, it is almost essential to stop by Villa 25 de Mayo, a historic village with adobe houses and Fort San Rafael del Diamante. You can also combine it with a visit to San Rafael Tourism to see nearby winery options.
The road has sections with curves and gravel, so you should drive carefully and fill up the tank before leaving the city. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and drinking water, as the Mendoza sun is very strong even on cool days.
