Pucará de Tilcara usually opens from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, although I recommend checking the exact hours on the official Pucará website before your visit. It is located just 3 km from Tilcara, a route you can do on foot, by taxi, or by car.
General admission usually costs around ARS 500, but I suggest checking updated prices and possible discounts for students or retirees directly at the ticket office or through the Jujuy Tourism Secretariat. Sometimes there are different rates for domestic and foreign visitors.
For a complete and relaxed experience, I recommend allowing at least 2 to 3 hours for your visit. This will give you time to explore its different sections, climb to the pyramid, and enjoy the panoramic views without rushing.
Pucará de Tilcara is a highly significant pre-Inca archaeological site that represents a defensive settlement of the Omaguaca culture. Its study helps us understand the social, economic, and military organization of the peoples who inhabited this region more than a thousand years ago, making it a living testimony to their legacy and history.
The best time to visit is during spring (September to November) or autumn (March to May), when the weather is milder. As for the best time of day, I suggest going early in the morning to avoid the midday heat and enjoy a quieter atmosphere, or at sunset to capture spectacular photos.
Due to the nature of the terrain, with uneven paths and slopes, accessibility for wheelchairs or baby strollers is limited. If you are traveling with someone with reduced mobility, I recommend contacting the Pucará administration in advance (you can find their phone number on the Jujuy Tourism website) to see which alternatives or sections are more accessible.
Tilcara is a strategic base in the Humahuaca Gorge. Very close to Pucará, you can visit the High-Altitude Botanical Garden and the Dr. Eduardo Casanova Archaeological Museum. Other must-see places in the region include the Devil’s Throat, Purmamarca and its Hill of Seven Colors, and Humahuaca with its Monument to Independence. IAudioguia can be your best companion for exploring all these sites.
I recommend bringing a cap or hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water, especially if you visit in summer. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Consider hiring a local guide or using our IAudioguia to enrich your experience with stories and interesting facts. And don’t forget your camera to capture the landscapes!
