Discover Hornocal Mountain of 14 Colors in Jujuy Province. A unique experience to learn about its history and significance.
Hornocal is a natural site with no closing time, but it is best visited during daylight hours. The ideal time is between 9 AM and 5 PM to make the most of the light. The most common way to get there is by hiring a 4x4 excursion or taking a private car service from Humahuaca, since the road is unpaved and has tight curves. You can also go in your own vehicle if it has high clearance and you are experienced driving on this kind of terrain. The journey takes about 1 hour.
At present, entry to Hornocal is free. However, to access the main viewpoints, visitors are often asked to make a small voluntary contribution to the local community that manages the area. This money goes toward maintaining the site and benefiting its residents. Please contribute if you can to help preserve this natural gem!
Although the main view is instantly impressive, I recommend setting aside at least 1.5 to 2 hours. This will allow you to calmly enjoy the views from different viewpoints, take photographs, and simply marvel at the vastness of the landscape without rushing. Keep in mind that the altitude can affect you a bit, so take your time.
Hornocal’s stunning colors, known as the Hornocal Range, are the result of millions of years of geological processes. Its rock layers, made up of different mineral compositions, were folded and exposed to erosion, creating this unique palette of colors. It does not have a documented cultural history as a specific ceremonial site, but for local communities and visitors, it is a place of profound natural beauty and wonder.
The best time to visit Hornocal and appreciate its intense colors is in the afternoon, between 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM, when the sunlight strikes from the side and highlights the full range of tones. As for the time of year, spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) usually offer the best weather, with less rain than summer and milder temperatures than winter. In any case, Hornocal is always breathtaking!
Accessibility at Hornocal can be challenging. The main viewpoint is close to the parking area, but there is a slight slope and the ground is uneven, with gravel and dirt. To reach lower viewpoints, there are paths that require a certain level of physical ability. If you have reduced mobility, it is advisable to check with the transport company or guide to assess the best options and enjoy the view from the most accessible point.
Jujuy Province is full of wonders! Very close by you have Humahuaca, a beautiful town with its town hall and the moving figure of Saint Francis Solano and a vibrant atmosphere. Do not miss the Pucará of Tilcara, Purmamarca and its Hill of Seven Colors, or even the Salinas Grandes if you have time. The Humahuaca Ravine is a World Heritage Site for a reason!
Of course, here are some key tips: First, bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat, as the sun’s radiation is intense. Second, stay well hydrated and bring enough water. Third, dress in layers, since the weather can change quickly. Fourth, and very importantly, take your time and walk slowly because of the altitude (more than 4,300 meters above sea level) to avoid altitude sickness. Finally, do not forget your camera! The view is unforgettable.
