Imagina fundar una ciudad bajo un diluvio bíblico, solo para que un terremoto la borre siglos después: aquí late el corazón rebelde de Mendoza.
The Museum of the Foundational Area is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 AM to 6 PM, and on Sundays and public holidays from 12 PM to 6 PM. It is closed on Mondays. No reservation is required; you can simply go directly. For more details, you can check its Facebook page: Museum of the Foundational Area Facebook.
Admission to the Museum of the Foundational Area costs 500 Argentine pesos. However, there are exceptions: retirees, pensioners, university and school students (accompanied by teachers), people with disabilities, and children under 12 enter free of charge. Residents of Mendoza with an ID proving residency also have free admission.
To fully enjoy the Museum of the Foundational Area and understand its rich history, we suggest allowing between 1 hour and 1 hour 30 minutes. This will give you enough time to explore the ruins, archaeological heritage, and exhibitions at a relaxed pace.
This museum is of vital importance because it houses the ruins of the old City of Mendoza, destroyed by the 1861 earthquake, as well as the remains of the Cabildo. It is the place where the city was founded, making it a living testimony to Mendoza's history, from pre-Columbian times to the colonial period. It is the historic heart of Mendoza.
For a more pleasant experience, we recommend visiting the museum in spring or autumn, avoiding the hottest months of the Mendoza summer. As for the time of day, the early morning hours when it opens or mid-afternoon are usually quieter and allow for a more relaxed visit.
Yes, the Museum of the Foundational Area is designed to be accessible. It has ramps and suitable pathways for people with reduced mobility and wheelchair users, allowing them to explore much of the site and enjoy the visit without difficulty.
Absolutely! Right next to the museum you will find Saint Francis Church and its basilica, with incredible historical and architectural value. In the same neighborhood, you can also explore other squares and historic buildings, or enjoy the local cuisine in the surrounding area.
I recommend wearing comfortable shoes, especially if you want to walk calmly through the outdoor ruins. Consider bringing a bottle of water, especially on warm days. And please, do not forget your camera to capture the rich history of the site! And of course, make the most of our audio guides from iAudioguía for an immersive and complete experience.
