Donde las olas guardan secretos de convivencia imposible
The Sea Lion Reserve is an open-air space in the port of Mar del Plata, so it is open 24 hours a day. You can visit at any time, although the best experience is during the day so you can clearly observe the sea lions. It is located on the fishermen’s pier, easily accessible on foot from the port area or by public transport and car.
Good news! Watching the sea lions in their natural habitat at the port is completely free. There is no admission fee or charge to access this area, which makes it an attraction open to everyone. That said, if you use nearby parking, that may have a cost.
For a complete experience, I would say 30 to 60 minutes is enough. You will be able to observe the sea lions, take some photos, and simply enjoy the atmosphere of the port. If you love photography or enjoy quiet observation, you may want to stay a little longer.
Over time, sea lions have made the port of Mar del Plata their home. Their presence is mainly due to the abundance of food available in the fishing area. They have adapted incredibly well to living alongside human activity, becoming an icon of the city.
Although you can see them at any time, the best time to visit is usually in the morning or at sunset, when activity in the port is a little lower and the sea lions are more relaxed. As for the time of year, they are present all year round, but in the warmer months, during the Argentine summer, they may be more active and more numerous.
Yes, the main viewing area, near the port’s breakwaters, is mostly accessible for people with reduced mobility. The walkways and surrounding area are usually flat. However, I always advise caution because it is an active port area.
Plenty! Right next to the reserve you have the Port Workers Museum "Cleto Ciocchini", ideal for learning about the port’s history. You can also walk along the Fishermen’s Promenade, enjoy local cuisine with fresh fish and seafood at the many restaurants, or take a stroll among the yellow fishing boats.
Of course, here are a few: bring your camera to capture those unique moments, keep a respectful distance so you do not disturb the animals, and watch your belongings, since it is a busy area. If you are going by car, keep in mind that parking may be limited during high season. And do not forget to enjoy the port atmosphere!
