A natural amphitheater of vibrant colors and unique geological formations in the Humahuaca Gorge.
El Hornocal is a natural site without fixed opening or closing hours, as it is located in an open area. However, to visit safely and comfortably, it is best to go during daylight hours. To get there, you will need to take a vehicle from Humahuaca along a gravel road of about 25 km that climbs to nearly 4,300 meters in altitude.
Access to El Hornocal itself is free, as it is a natural monument. However, if you go in a private vehicle, you may find local communities requesting a voluntary contribution at the entrance to the road for route maintenance, which is highly recommended to support the area.
To fully enjoy El Hornocal, it is recommended to plan at least 1 to 2 hours at the viewpoint. This will allow you to admire the landscape, take photographs, and simply contemplate the majesty of the mountains. Keep in mind that acclimatization to the altitude may also affect your pace.
El Hornocal, also known as the Hornocal Mountain Range, is a geological formation in the Humahuaca Gorge that stands out for its impressive colors and V-shaped strata. While it does not have a documented cultural history like a specific archaeological site, its beauty is an integral part of the UNESCO World Heritage landscape of the gorge, representing the geological richness of the Andean region and serving as a natural symbol of Jujuy.
The best time to appreciate the vibrant colors of El Hornocal is during the afternoon, when the sun begins to descend. The light falls from the side, enhancing the tones of the rock formations. The dry season, from May to October, usually offers clearer skies, although it is a spectacular sight at any time of year.
Unfortunately, access to El Hornocal, especially the viewpoint area, is not fully accessible for people with reduced mobility. The road is unpaved, and the surface at the viewpoint may be uneven. Caution is recommended and, if assistance is needed, it is best to arrange it in advance with local tour operators.
Maimará and the Humahuaca Gorge offer many attractions. Near El Hornocal, you can visit the town of Humahuaca, with its Monument to Independence. There is also Purmamarca and its Hill of Seven Colors, Tilcara and the Pucará of Tilcara, and Uquía with its church. I recommend visiting the official Jujuy tourism website for more information: turismo.jujuy.gob.ar.
To make the most of your visit, remember that you will be at a considerable altitude. Drink plenty of water, avoid excessive exertion, and bring warm clothing, as the weather can change quickly. Do not forget your camera, sunscreen, and sunglasses. And please, do not leave any trash and respect nature!
