A journey back in time on narrow-gauge rails through Argentine Patagonia, the Old Patagonian Express is a historic train and national monument.
La Trochita operates on varying days and schedules depending on the season (generally from October to April). Tourist trains usually depart from Old Esquel Station toward Nahuel Pan. Check the latest schedules on the official website or call +54 2945 451-403. It is located at Rogelio Parada s/n, Esquel.
Prices vary depending on the route (short sections or the full journey). In 2024, the standard fare is around ARS 15,000 approximately. Retirees and children receive discounts. Confirm updated prices on the ticket sales website.
The round trip to Nahuel Pan lasts about 3 to 4 hours, including a stop in the Mapuche community. You can stay longer if you visit the Railway Museum at the station, which is free.
It is one of the last steam trains in the world still operating on a narrow gauge of 75 cm. It was declared a National Historic Monument and is a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage status. Paul Theroux made it iconic in his book 'The Old Patagonian Express.'
Spring (October-November) and autumn (March-April) offer mild temperatures and colorful scenery. In summer (January) there are more tourists but longer days. In winter it runs only if there is no snow on the tracks.
It has limitations because it is a historic train with high steps and narrow cars. Ask about options by calling +54 2945 451-403. The museum at the station does have access ramps.
Do not miss: 1) Los Alerces National Park (1 hour), 2) downtown Esquel with its Train Museum, 3) Leleque Museum about Patagonian history (45 minutes).
Book 2 to 3 days in advance during high season. Bring warm clothing even if it is sunny, as the carriages can be cold. Steam smoke may stain light-colored clothes. Arrive 45 minutes early to see the locomotive. It works best if you pay in cash (Argentine pesos).
