Vasto mar de dunas en el corazón del Sahara argelino, cerca de Béchar. Un paisaje de arena interminable moldeado por el viento, testigo de la historia nómada del desierto.
As a natural desert formation, the Erg is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. To visit safely, it is mainly reached by 4x4 vehicles from towns such as Taghit (about 90 km south of Béchar), where it is essential to book an excursion with experienced local guides.
Access to the desert is free; there is no official entrance fee or ticket office. However, the real cost lies in the logistics: you should budget for 4x4 transport and guide services, whose prices vary depending on the length of the excursion and whether it includes meals or an overnight stay.
For a first introduction and to enjoy the sunset, a visit of 3 to 4 hours is enough. If you are looking for a fully immersive experience, we strongly recommend an excursion of at least 2 days with one bivouac night under the stars.
The Great Western Erg has historically served as both a formidable natural barrier and a corridor for trans-Saharan caravan routes. Culturally, the area is vital because of its proximity to ancient settlements and, above all, the Neolithic rock art found around Taghit, evidence of a history stretching back thousands of years.
The ideal period is between October and April, when daytime temperatures are pleasant; avoid summer (June to August), as the heat exceeds 45°C and can be dangerous. The best time of day is undoubtedly sunset, when the low light highlights the relief and reddish color of the dunes.
Due to the nature of the terrain (soft sand and high dunes), direct access to the dunes is not suitable for wheelchairs or people with severe mobility limitations. However, panoramic views can still be enjoyed from roadside access points or from hotel terraces in the Taghit area.
You should not miss the oasis of Taghit, known as 'The Enchanting One,' with its magnificent palm grove and its old ksar (mud-brick fortress). It is also highly recommended to visit Beni Abbès, another spectacular oasis located on the edge of the Great Erg.
Never venture into the dunes alone; orientation is very difficult, and it is vital to go with a local guide. Always bring plenty of water (more than you think you will need), polarized sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen, and a cheche scarf to protect yourself from the sand if it gets windy.
