Yes, entry is free because it is an active place of worship. However, voluntary donations for its upkeep are accepted.
It is recommended to spend between 45 minutes and 1 hour to appreciate its unique architecture and spiritual atmosphere. If you include time for photos and reflection, you could extend your visit to 1.5 hours.
Built in 1660 during the Ottoman period, it is famous for its blend of Turkish and Andalusian styles. Its name 'El Djedid' ('The New') distinguishes it from the older mosque in the Casbah.
Visit in the morning (10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.) to avoid crowds. The best time of year is from March to May or from September to November, when temperatures are milder.
The Casbah has narrow cobbled streets that make access difficult. The mosque has steps at the entrance, but assistance can be requested from the staff.
A 5-minute walk away are the Casbah Citadel (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), Ketchaoua Mosque, and the Palais des Raïs. More information at: UNESCO Casbah.
Dress modestly (shoulders covered; women with a headscarf) and wear shoes that are easy to remove. Avoid prayer times (especially Friday at midday) if you are not Muslim. Check local guides at: algierscitytour.dz.
