A fascinating journey through the rich cultural heritage of the Mozabite community in the heart of the Algerian desert.
The museum is open from Saturday to Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and closed on Fridays. It is advisable to check for possible low-season changes by calling +213 29 87 65 43 or visiting the official Algerian culture portal.
General admission costs a symbolic 200 DZD (about €1.30). Students and visitors under 18 enter free with ID. No advance booking is required.
Between 1 hour 30 minutes and 2 hours 30 minutes is recommended to explore the 7 themed rooms at a relaxed pace, including exhibitions on traditional architecture, ceramics, and Ibadi clothing.
This unique heritage, recognized by UNESCO, preserves the Ibadi tradition, a branch of Islam, developed in the M'Zab Valley since the 10th century, with urban models adapted to the desert that are still in use today.
Choose October to April (15-25°C), avoiding the extreme summer heat, which can reach 50°C. Early mornings are ideal to combine with the old market (Ghardaia on Algeria.com).
The ground and first floors are accessible by ramps, but the panoramic terrace can only be reached by stairs due to the architectural features of the historic building. An adapted restroom is available.
In the M'Zab Valley, visit: 1) Ghardaia Market (200 m), 2) Beni Isguen Palm Grove (5 km), 3) the old town of Melika. See routes at the Algerian Tourist Office.
Wear comfortable shoes for uneven floors, bring water (there are fountains in the courtyard), and respect the photography rules (no flash). The guards usually speak Arabic and French, but there are brochures in English.
