The cave is open Tuesday to Sunday, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (check for seasonal changes). To get there from Tirana, take the SH5 road toward Pukë (about 150 km, 3 hours by car). Using your own vehicle or a taxi from central Pukë is recommended. Contact the local tourism office (+355 68 224 1233) to confirm opening hours. More info: Albania Tourism.
Access is currently free, but hiring a local guide (around €10–15 per group) is recommended to better understand its history and geological formation. Some organized tours from Shkodër include transport and a guide. Check options here: Outdoor Albania.
A full visit takes between 1 and 1.5 hours, including the access path (about 15 minutes from the parking area) and the interior route. The cave is about 80 meters long, with interesting formations, but it is not very extensive.
Hajmel Cave is a unique geological site with limestone formations more than 10 million years old. According to local archaeologists, Neolithic tools have been found here, suggesting early human presence. It is considered natural heritage by the municipality of Pukë.
We recommend visiting from May to September, when the path is dry and there is less interior humidity. Avoid rainy days, as access becomes slippery. The early morning hours are ideal for avoiding groups and enjoying the natural light more fully.
No, access requires walking along rocky trails and uneven ground, as well as natural steps inside the cave. There is no adapted infrastructure. It is not recommended for strollers or for visitors with significant mobility difficulties.
In Pukë you can visit: 1) the Albanian Flag Monument (a local landmark), 2) the Pukë Ethnographic Museum, and 3) the Fani River canyon. About 1 hour away by car is Lake Koman, famous for its cruises: Komani Lake Ferry.
Essential: non-slip footwear with good grip (hiking boots are ideal) and a headlamp (interior lighting is limited). Recommended: a light jacket (the inside temperature stays at 12–15°C) and water. Touching the rock formations or leaving trash is not allowed.
