A majestic fortress on the Albanian coast, steeped in history and mystery, offering breathtaking views of the Ionian Sea.
The castle is generally open every day from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM, although hours may be shorter outside the summer season. It is located on a small peninsula along the Albanian Riviera, about a 15-minute drive south of Himarë, and you can easily reach it by following the main SH8 road; parking is available on the isthmus that connects to the fortress.
The entrance fee is usually around 300 LEK (approximately 3 euros) per person. It is essential to bring cash (lek), as credit cards are very unlikely to be accepted at the ticket office.
A standard visit usually lasts between 45 minutes and one hour. This gives you enough time to explore the dark interior galleries, see the old cells, and climb up to the terrace to enjoy the stunning panoramic views of the bay.
Legend says that Ali Pasha of Tepelena built this triangular fort in the 19th century as a gift for his wife, Vasiliqi, although studies suggest it may have been an earlier Venetian fortification. Its star-shaped design and excellent state of preservation make it a unique architectural gem in the region.
I recommend visiting at sunset, when the golden light washes over the stone and the Ionian Sea, creating a perfect setting for photography. If you prefer to avoid the summer heat, early morning is also ideal for a peaceful visit.
Unfortunately, access is difficult for people with reduced mobility or wheelchair users. The terrain is uneven, with stone paths and steep stairs leading to the different levels of the fortress.
Directly opposite, you can see from a distance the famous submarine tunnels from the communist era carved into the mountain. You can also take the opportunity to swim at the peaceful Porto Palermo beach, located right at the foot of the isthmus, or visit the nearby town of Himarë for a meal.
Wear comfortable shoes because the ground is made of uneven stone, and bring a flashlight (or use your phone's light) to see clearly in the rather dark interior corridors. Do not forget to bring water, as there are no shops inside the castle, and consider using our audio guide to understand the secrets hidden within its walls.
