A stunning 10th-century Orthodox monastery, a spiritual refuge and architectural gem on the shores of Lake Ohrid.
The monastery is open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. during high season (May-October). It is located 30 km from Pogradec beside Lake Ohrid. You can get there by taxi, private car, or organized tours. Check updated hours on the official website.
Entry to the monastic complex is free, but a voluntary donation of 200 lek (approximately 2 euros) is suggested for maintenance. Access to some specific interior areas may involve small additional charges.
A full visit takes between 1.5 and 2 hours, including time to see the main church, the famous natural springs, stroll through the panoramic gardens, and enjoy views of Lake Ohrid.
Founded in 895 by Saint Naum of Ohrid, a disciple of Saints Cyril and Methodius, it is a symbol of Balkan Orthodox Christianity. It stands out for its 16th-century Byzantine frescoes and its medieval architecture adapted to the natural surroundings.
April to June and September to October offer mild temperatures and fewer crowds. Avoid July and August if you prefer a quieter visit. Weekday mornings are more peaceful than busy weekends.
Access can be difficult: there is uneven terrain on cobbled paths and steps to enter the main church. There are alternative accessible areas such as the lower gardens and the lake viewpoints.
A must-visit: Lake Ohrid (UNESCO World Heritage Site). Also recommended: the Drilon springs (4 km) and the historic center of Pogradec (30 km). In North Macedonia, the nearby city of Ohrid is only 15 km away.
1) Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered) as it is a religious site 2) Wear comfortable shoes for walking on paths 3) Try the local trout at nearby restaurants 4) In summer, bring sun protection and water. Contact: +355 69 123 4567
